Make your own DIY Reusable Face Wipes

This easy sewing tutorial is a great alternative to disposable cotton rounds. Made with upcycled materials or scrap fabrics, this is a Zero Waste project that will elevate your self-care routine. Good for you and good for the environment!

Why Reusable Face Wipes?

Making the switch to reusable face wipes is an easy and fun way to take care of your skin, your wallet, and the planet. These face wipe pads are washable and can be used over and over again, so you don’t need to constantly buy cotton rounds.

By choosing soft fabrics, they are more gentle on your skin, yet hold up much better compared to disposable cotton rounds which can disintegrate pretty quickly.

Using fabric scraps or upcycling towels or flannel sheets will make this a Zero Waste project for even greater eco-friendly potential.

The square shape reduces the amount of fabric waste (and waste of time cutting all those darn circles). Plus, they turn out better as squares, which is a confidence builder for beginning sewers!

Supplies for Reusable Face Wipes

  • Soft Fabric: Choose a soft, absorbent, and skin-friendly fabric for your face wipes.
    • Cotton or flannel are nice lightweight options.
    • For a more structured “washcloth” face wipe you can use terry cloth, toweling or even fleece.
  • Scissors or rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
  • Pins or Wonder Clips
  • Sewing Machine
  • Container: Find a container to store your finished wipes. A mason jar or any container used for disposable cotton rounds that you may already have.

How to Make DIY Reusable Face Wipes

  1. Measure and cut your fabric into squares.
    • You need two squares of fabric for each wipe.
    • You can use both in cotton flannel for a soft, lightweight wipe.
    • Try terry cloth or upcycling a towel or washcloth that has seen better days for more of a scrubby texture.
    • A standard size is around 4×4, feel free to adjust based on your needs.
    • If you are taking off a full face of makeup, a larger face wipe might be better.

  2. Clip or pin your squares with Right Sides Together and sew around all sides, leaving a 1” gap in one side for turning
  3. Trim the seam allowance and clip corners to reduce bulk. Turn right side out.
  4. Close the gap and topstitch. You’re all done!

Tips for Usage

  • Use the DIY reusable face wipes just like you would with disposable ones – to remove makeup, apply toner or cleansers, etc.
  • Not recommended for use with nail polish remover as that will permanently stain the fabric (and it’s stinky).
  • To keep your face wipes fresh and sanitary, wash them regularly. Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can leave residue on the fabric.
  • Toss them in mesh laundry bag (check out the mesh zipper bag sewing pattern). Wash in their mesh bag in your washing machine along with your regular laundry.
  • You can lay them flat to dry if you don’t want wrinkles, or just toss the mesh bag into the dryer.
