DIY Garden Orb from Embroidery Hoops

DIY Garden Orb from Embroidery Hoops

DIY garden orbs made from metal embroidery hoops are a whimsical project that will bring a touch of magic to your garden!

This easy and fun to make craft project will add a unique charm to your outdoor space or even brighten up your indoor corners.

I’ve fallen in love with garden orbs which are all over Pinterest. In my wandering at the local thrift store I came across some metal embroidery hoops and they were just the right size for this upcycled garden orb project.

I bought two metal embroidery hoops for $1.49 each and was able to use some silver spray paint from a previous project so this was super cheap.

Materials and Supplies:

  • 2 metal embroidery hoops (mine were 6”)
  • Silver spray paint
  • glue (I used a dab from the hot glue gun)

Getting Started on your Garden Orb:

I started by scraping the cork from the inside hoops. It came out pretty easily but left some funk on one of them. I decided to spray paint all the pieces in silver to get a consistent color.

I set up a spray booth in the back yard with a large box. I strung the hoops over a pole and just used one light coat, spinning the hoops with a gloved hand to get all the sides. I let them dry for 20 minutes.

Assemble the Orb:

The hoops were tight enough that I didn’t really need any glue or adhesive, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a dab from the hot glue gun at the joints.

Start with the two inner hoops, set at 90 degrees on the vertical orientation.

Then add one of the exterior hoops, in the same vertical orientation. Wiggle the hoops, so they’re evenly spaced.

Now slide the last exterior hoop over on the horizontal. Once it was at the halfway point and everything looked pretty even, I dabbed a last little bit of glue at each of these intersections (there were a lot!).

I gave the finished orb one more coat of silver spray paint since it’ll live outside. I love how it looks on the outdoor coffee table with the “new” thrift store lanterns.
